Using a Card Sketch to Inspire a Layout Design

Yesterday on the BasicGrey Blog my assignment was to use an awesome card sketch by Susan Stringfellow to inspire a layout design. I hadn’t done this in awhile and had so much fun with it! Here is Susan’s sketch I worked from.

And here is the resulting page using the BasicGrey True Love collection. You can see that I followed the sketch pretty closely, but expanded it a bit to fit a 12 x 12 format.

SUPPLIES: BasicGrey True Love Collection: True Love Proposal Paper, True Love Secret Admirer Paper, True Love Little Things Paper, True Love Love’s Garden Paper, True Love Giddy Paper, True Love Kissing Tree Paper, True Love Bottle Cap Stickers, True Love Snippets, True Love Die Cuts & Transparencies, True Love Chipboard Shapesย Other: Photo Corners, Silver Mini Brads, Cream Ribbon, Black Journaling Pen, Distress Ink, Adhesives, Trimmer, Scissors

I grouped my photos together in one large rectangle, just like the large rectangle in the center of the sketch. For my background I replaced the strip on the right hand side with a series of patterned paper strips stacked on top of each other. This is a great way to use up paper scraps!

The heart in the sketch really caught my attention and I decided to replicate it on my layout as a page accent. I stacked two chipboard hearts together and then used a chipboard tag, a bottlecap sticker, and a design trimmed from the Snippets to recreate the row of notched paper strips.

BasicGrey design team member, Waleska Neris, also created a layout from Susan’s sketch. Come see her take on it! I love what she made. ๐Ÿ™‚

Have a great day!

  1. Hi Jana……I was wondering if you could tell me where you have all of your pictures made smaller. Do you print them at home or send them out? Also, it would be AWESOME for those of us that love to copy your WONDERFUL layouts if you would let us in on the size of your photos! Thanks for all of your hard work, you are simply AMAZING!!!Michele

    1. Hi Michele! I’m so sorry that I am just now seeing this … I print my photos at home. Thank you for the interest in knowing the photo sizes. That is a great idea to include that information on future posts. I try to use mostly standard sizes, but sometimes I crop them down (like on this page). Here are the sizes for this particular layout, in case you would like them. The top photo is 4″ x 6.25″, the three small photos are 2 x 2, 2 x 2 3/8, and 2 x 2. And the last one on the bottom is 3.5 x 5. Hope that helps!
